The Environment Agency is going ahead with its plans to develop a major scheme to reduce flood risk to the towns of Shoreham-by-sea and Lancing in West Sussex.
The town of Shoreham-by-sea is vulnerable to tidal flooding from the River Adur. The flood defences in Shoreham-by-sea are old and are different heights – in some places they are also in poor condition and need replacing. The risk of flooding will increase over time as climate change leads to sea level rise and rainfall events become more frequent.
The Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme will reduce flood risk by improving the defences along the River Adur. Shoreham will get £9.5 million for the Scheme via the Government’s Coast to Capital Growth Deal announced earlier this year. The project covers the east and west banks of the River Adur in Shoreham, protecting more than 2,300 households and 160 commercial properties currently at significant risk of flooding.
The Environment Agency will be applying for full planning permission for the whole scheme in summer 2015, giving people the opportunity to comment on the design of the defences.
The Environment Agency is working in partnership with West Sussex County Council and Adur District Council to design and build the new defences. The Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership has also agreed to contribute funds to the scheme which means that the construction of the defences can start in early 2016.
The Environment Agency has been working with Adur District Council on the project since 2012. Surveys have already been carried out along the route of the proposed works, to gather detailed data on ground conditions and height levels.
The Agency has been consulting with the community about the various scheme options since 2009, and now has approval to refine the designs. Over the coming months the Agency will be holding a series of public exhibitions - the next event that the Environment Agency is attending is the Shoreham Farmers’ Market on Saturday.
